Renewable Energy Credits

Maryland geothermal systems can generate Geothermal Renewable Energy Credits (GRECs)

ClearPath Renewables provides leadership in the renewable energy commodity markets with unsurpassed value created for our customers and partners. A Renewable Energy Credit (REC) is a certificate that creates value for the positive environmental features of energy produced from renewable energy sources. RECs create progress towards the State of Maryland’s Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS), which sets goals for the portion of energy produced from renewable energy generation. To be in compliance with RPS goals, utilities purchase RECs in large quantities from ClearPath Renewables.

Your geothermal heating and cooling system generates GRECs based on key factors of your home, like square footage, insulation quality, and type of heating system replaced. ClearPath helps geothermal system owners certify their geothermal system with the State of Maryland. After certification, ClearPath assigns GRECs to your account on a periodic basis, and in a process called aggregation, combines the RECs generated from your system with the RECs generated from 1000’s of other systems. These aggregated RECs are in large enough quantities for utilities to purchase and command the highest price in the marketplace.

The value of RECs varies over time and the RECs generated from geothermal energy systems are valued differently than those generated from solar energy systems.
